As he was aging, electronics company C.E.O. Eric Cameron became so obsessed with prolonging his life that he began diverting his company's resources to projects toward that end. He hired criminals to steal SHIELD technology for creating LMDs (Life Model Decoys). It was Cameron's intention to transfer his mind out of his aging body into a perfect artificial form. He called this new form "Adonis," named, of course, after the famed figure from Greco-Roman classical religion who has come to symbolize human physical beauty. But, alas, the transfer process was sabotaged by Eric Cameron's own son Brady, causing the form to becomes deformed. Eric Cameron, in the super android form "Adonis," then decided it was his mission to destroy all beauty. Clearly he was deranged by his experience. Adonis went on a rampage through New York before being defeated by Captain America. In their battle, Adonis accidentally electrocuted himself.
Being "anti-beauty" certainly seems like a peculiar obsession or prime motivation. But one should keep in mind that this was not a well-considered, rational position developed over the course of a lifetime. Rather, this strange obsession was rashly latched onto by a mind and soul that was probably unhinged by being transferred into a machine and then deformed.
For a far longer time, Eric Cameron fanatically pursued a goal which is less common: prolonging his life at all costs, coupled with the desire to forever have a strong, vibrant body. In the end, both goals might be seen as equally irrational and dangerous.
Eric Cameron probably had little experience with or belief in established organized religions and churches. Virtually all significant religion and denominations deal with aging and dying head on and accept these events as realities rather than evils to be avoided no matter the price. A man with a sincere belief in an afterlife, transmigration of the soul, or simply peace at knowing his place in the universe, would not have done what Cameron did.
