Charlotte's young niece Lisa and nephew Theodore had psychic powers, but little understanding or control of their abilities. They accidentally killed their mother (Charlotte's sister, Emily Hearst) when the devoutly religious woman tried to exorcise "demons" from the children.
Charlotte presumably gained custody of the children after Emily's death.
