Eleanor Grey's brother was an Anglican priest and missionary. He had gone to China, where he had studied Buddhism. After returning to London, he told his sister Eleanor and her husband Malkin about the stories he had heard about reincarnation and about spirits returning to inhabit the bodies of animals. Malkin scoffed at such ideas. But later, Malkin was killed by the spirit of his ancestor Charles Grey and Malkin himself inhabited the body of a cat.
In 1857, Eleanor Grey's husband Malkin was once again savagely beating her. Malkin Grey's ancestor Charles Grey (who committed suicide 100 years before) was able to enter Malkin's body and cause it to stab himself to death. Charles then re-animated Malkin's body. But Charles was hardly less abusive toward Eleanor than Malkin had been. After suffering from abuse at the hands of Charles Grey (in Malkin's body), Eleanor seized an opportunity to strike back and crushed Charles/Malkin's head with a poker. This permanently destroyed the body of Malkin Grey, leaving the spirits of both Malkin and Charles Grey without an available host body. Their days of terrorizing Eleanor were over.
