Fitzgerald was a very religious Irish Catholic. He was a militant member of the IRA (Irish Republican Army), a Catholic nationalist terrorist organization.
When his youngest child was three years old, Fitzgerald went up a mountainside and prayed to the Heavens for his son Paddy to have powers. His son never obtained super-powers, but when she was sixteen, his daughter manifest mutant powers. His daughter, Molly, became the Irish super-heroine Shamrock.
Years later, Fitzgerald's son was killed by a terrorist's bomb. Driven crazy by his grief, Fitzgerald blamed his daughter and tried to kill her. To that end, he allied himself with the villain Arnim Zola. But this only led to Fitzgerald's own death.
