Alan and his friend Paul were petty thieves who broke into Guy Gardner's rented storage unit. A powerful "lantern thing" that Kyle Rayner had in his possession caused Alan to switch places with the superhero known as the Atom from the Tangent dimension (Earth 9). The superheroes Red Arrow, Black Canary, and Green Lantern John Stewart came to the scene and managed to use the lantern to switch the Atom and Alan back to their own dimensions.
