Sar-El was a hero of old Krypton. Sar-El's exploits still inspired Kryptonians many generations later, and Sar-El had become something of a folk hero or legend to Kryptonians.
In the story titled "The Best Day" in Superman Annual #13 (Jan. 2008), Superman has brought his family to an outing on the planet Terabithia. On page 8 in this story (page 98 in the Superman: The Third Kryptonian trade paperback), Superman's foster son Chris Kent is standing on a rock formation pretending to be Sar-El. In panel 2, Chris exclaims in a loud voice, "I am Sar-El, hero of Old Krypton! None shall breach the walls of my fortress!"
Supergirl looks at what Chris is doing and comments: "Great castle, Chris! Of course, if this was really Sar-El's fortress, it'd be wide and low, and built on the plains below the jewel mountains. There were only ruins there when I saw it, but they were pretty wild . . ."
Upon hearing this, Chris Kent is in awe. In panel 3, Chris says, "No way! You saw Sar-El's fortress? For real?! I . . . I used to hide from the others, in the Phantom Zone. Listen to 'em talk. I could pretend I was there, the places they talked about. Pretend I was out, somewhere. But all I knew was names . . ."
