An unnamed assassin - a black man wearing dark sunglasses and a dark suit wth a trench coat - tried to murder Rev. John Maddox in his own church.
Maddox managed to elude the assassin and retrieve the gun left by the recently departed Jamie Madrox. John held Jamie's gun to the assassin's head. But before John could do anything else, the assassin uttered a single word - "cortex" - and then killed himself by shooting himself in the head.
