It is unclear whether Cat-Man was a mutate (i.e., a mutated alien), or a regular member of an unidentified species. Cat-Man looked very much like an uplifted, anthropomorphized Earth cat. Possibly it was an uplifted animal from Earth. Little was actually revealed about its origins.
