Doctor Clyde is a doctor who worked with super-villains incarcerated at the Slabside Island Maximum Security Prison. He was tired of the Joker always manipulating others and having a laugh at everybody else's expense. Doctor Clyde decided to see if the Joker could take joke as well as he gave one.

As a trick or "joke," Doctor Clyde modified a brain scan of the Joker to make it look like the Joker had an inoperable brain tumor. The Joker believed this hoax and became convinced that he was dying. Wanting to go out with a bang, the Joker engineered an escape for all of the super-villains incarcerated at the Slab. He also "Jokerized" them, causing them to have white skin, facial features similar to his own, and a maniacal sense of humor that put them under his control. The escaped villains wreaked havoc the world over, causing massive death an destruction. Doctor Clyde watched this unfold on the news and was despondent over his role in prompting the Joker's crazed tirade.

The Black Canary managed to find Doctor Clyde and talked to him in his home. After learning the truth, the Black Canary had him toll the Joker the truth once the arch-villain had finally been apprehended.

In dialogue, Dr. Clyde is always referred to as "Doctor Clyde," with the word "Doctor" written out in full, apparently in accordance with convention for printing spoken dialogue. His first initial ("H") is known from the picture of his mailbox in panel 2 on page 19 in Joker: Last Laugh #4 (page 115 in the trade Joker: Last Laugh trade paperback).

The mailbox is seen as Black Canary approaches Dr. Clyde's home in the scene that introduces the character for the first time. The first words Black Canary hears Dr. Clyde speak are: "What have I done? What have I done? What have I done?"

On page 23 (page 118 in the trade paperback), we see the continuation of Dr. Clyde's conversation with Black Canary."

Black Canary urges him, "Say it again, Doctor Clyde. And don't leave anything out."

Dr. Clyde said, "I thought I'd have a good one . . . but at his expense for once. I thought it would shut him up for a while. I never thought this would happen. The image on his C.A.T.-scan . . . I altered it. There's no tumor. I drew it in with a lightpen. It's all a big joke. Just a dumb stupid joke.

Black Canary was aghast. "My God, Clyde . . . What have you done to us?"

In Joker: Last Laugh #5, Dr. Clyde is mentioned (although not by name) by Black Canary as she recounts what she learned to Oracle. On page 13 in this issue (page 139 in the trade paperback), Black Canary is speeding on her motorcycle while speaking to Oracle via a telecommunications link. Black Canary says, "The Joker is not terminal, Barb... I just got back from the doctor who diagnosed him. The Joker cheesed off a prison doc. He got back a the clown by altering a C.A.T. scan. I'm beaming both versions to you."
