Tyrone D. Gus was a member of the sect known as the Sons of Satannish. This was a sect of sorcerers who received mystic power from the devilish demon Satannish. Essentially, Mr. Gus was a Satanist. He had been a teacher young Luke Cage (when the hero had been known by his birth name, Carl Lucas). When Cage was an adult, his former teacher tried to sacrifice him to Satannish, but the Satanist died while trying to do so.
