Jasper Keaton, a former Savings and Loans pirate, is named after and loosely based on real-life financier Charles Keating, a central figure in the Savings and Loan scandal of the late 1980s. Keating was a devout Catholic and an ardent anti-pornography (anti-smut) crusader.

It is not clear that the comic book character "Jasper Keaton" was ever overtly identified by name as a "Catholic." But many of his motivations in the story arc that featured him were clearly grounded in his deeply religious background and sincere religious beliefs.

Jasper Keaton was the founder and leader of the American Purity Foundation. He founded this group, which appears to primarily be a political party, when he attempted to re-entered politics. The American Purity Foundation had a strong anti-smut agenda. One of Keaton's primary agents was Captain Rectitude. Keaton had empowered Captain Rectitude, whose real name was Bob Jones, and used this new heroic figure as a personal bodyguard. The anti-smut agenda and Captain Rectitude's real name all suggest that Jasper Keaton was deeply religious. Some of these elements seem like the work of a "fundamentalist Christian" of the conservative Protestant/Evangelical type. The historic Bob Jones himself (founder of Bob Jones university) was indeed a "fundamentalist Christian." (Years later the comic book character Bob Jones, i.e., Captain Rectitude, identified himself as Jewish, but this has no bearing on what kind of character writer/creator Steve Gerber intended Keaton to be.)
