Diablo is identified in the story's title as "The Demon from the Fifth Dimension." But descriptions of this story refer to the creature as an extradimensional "smoke monster" from the 5th Dimension. Diablo clearly has a demonic name (the Spanish word for "devil"), but may well have been more of an extradimensional "alien" than a "demon" in the traditional sense. This story well illustrates the fuzzy boundaries between what constitutes an "demon" (with ties to religious concepts such as Hell and the devil) and what constitutes an "extradimensional" or "alien."
