Brainiac, one of Superman's greatest foes, was introduced in the story titled "The Super-Duel in Space" in Action Comics #242 (July 1958). In this story, Brainiac shrinks a number of Earth's greatest cities and transports them into bottles on his space ship. One of the cities is New York. In panel 1 on page 6 of this story, Brainiac uses tweezers to rip up the George Washington Bridge. A shrunken New York City motorist on the bridge is startled, saying, "Help! Giant tweezers ripped the George Washington Bridge loose!"
