Michael Zelinsky's father was a New York City police officer who was killed in the line of duty. Michael's major male parental figure after that was his grandfather, Leo Zelinsky, a man who served as a tailor for both super-heroes and super-villains.

Leo Zelinsky made it a rule for himself to never get involved in conflicts between heroes and villains. But when he found out about an assassination that the villain Killshot planned - before it was to take place, he was in an unusual ethical situation. Young Michael Zelinsky convinced his grandfather that it was the right thing to warn somebody Killshot's plans. Michael's grandfather ended up warning Spider-Man, which was the right thing to do.
