A handsome reporter wearing a green trenchcoat covered the same press conference as Clark Kent in the office of the Chief of Police. This reporter had a few lines, including expressing admiration for the way Superman destroyed the city's slums in order to get the government to build safe new low-cost housing for the impoverished slum's residents. The reporter in the green trenchcoat also hushed Clark Kent when Kent called the Chief's new transfer a "conceited windbag."
The reporter in the green trenchcoat seems like he was a tremendously decent guy. Detective Captain Reilly, enraged when he heard Clark Kent's whsipered criticism of him, grabbed Kent and looked as though he was about to punch him. The green trenchcoat-wearing reporter tried to pull the two men apart and told Reilly: "Lay off, Reilly! He didn't mean anything!" The unnamed reporter may well have saved Clark Kent from getting punched in the face by the ill-tempered Chicago police detective. (Of course, this would not have actually hurt Kent, but the "mild-mannered" reporter would have had to scramble to think of an excuse for why Reilly busted his hand on his face.)
Even other observers thought Clark was about to be punched by Reilly. A photographer at the scene later told Lois Lane: "Clark got his story all right, but he almost got a poke in the jaw in addition! You should have seen his face, Lois! It went white! I was afraid Clark would faint!"
