An unnamed truck driver was featured pages 2 and 3 of the story retroactively titled ""The Slot Machine Racket" in Superman #5 (Summer 1940). The driver himself was seen in 7 panels. The truck he was driving, which looked like it was carrying dirt, was seen in an additional 3 panels.
The truck driver almost accidentally struck a young schoolboy who was darting off to school after playing slot machines. Fortunately Clark Kent saved the boy by grabbing him and holding him close to the pavement as the truck passed over both of them.
The truck driver stopped his truck, got out and complimented Clark Kent, saying, "I gotta hand it to ya, bud! You've got nerves of steel!"
Clark Kent wanted to deflect such compliments. He was worried about revealing his secret identity as Superman. "Nerves of steel? Me!" Clark said. Then he pretended to faint.
The truck driver looked at the falling Clark Kent, saying, "Yessir! Cool-headed, that's you--! Hey! Look!"
On the pavement, Clark asked, "W-What happened?"
Lois Lane said, "You saved a boy's life, then passed out!"
The truck driver held his finger to his lips in a cautioning gesture to Lois Lane. He told her, "Careful what you say! You're liable to make him faint again!"
By stopping quickly after this near-accident and staying around to make sure everybody was okay, even though people might have been upset at him for almost hitting the boy with his speeding truck, this truck driver demonstrated that he was a genuinely caring, conscientious person. Some people in his situation would have simply kept on driving or would have yelled at the boy for running out into the street so suddenly.
