Ken Hall was the "owner of the huge Hall Lumber interests, one of the most profitable enterprises in the North Woods. In panel 2 on page 1 of the that features him Mr. Hall directed his attorney to draw up papers that would channel all proceeds from his lumber camps and mills toward founding and funding a free summer camp for underprivileged youths. Hall explained to his attorney, "I was a kid in the slums, myself, and I haven't forgotten how I roasted in the city in the host summer."
Daily Planet reporter Lois Lane was impressed when she heard about Hall's plans. "This fellow Hall is all right!" she opined. "I didn't know millionaires were built that way!"
Clark Kent chimed in, "A man can have a million and still have a heart!"
Unfortunately, Hall was found murdered on the site of one of his lumber camps not long afterward. The headline said, "Lumber King dies in fall!" The sub-heading noted "Will Benefits Underprivileged!"
Ken Hall's brother Brett contested the will in court, but the court declined to grant him any of his brother's fortune. The will was clear. The money from Ken Hall's business was intended for the charitable summer camp for youths.
Months later, when no money was forthcoming, Perry White assigned Lois Lane and Clark Kent to investigate. The two reporters decided to travel to the lumber camp and go undercover as workers in order to find out what was happening.
Sadly, it was eventually discovered that Ken Hall's own brother, Brett Hall, murdered his brother in a plot to steal his brother's wealth. After losing his court case, Brett Hall had hired people to sabotage operations at the lumber camps, hoping to temporarily ruin them financially so he could purchase them dirt cheap and then run them for his own profit. The murderous brother's plot was foiled by Clark Kent (Superman) and Lois Lane.
