Amos Flood was a Protestant preacher in Redemption Valley, Alabama. He was extremely religious and preached what may be regarded as an "ultra-conservative" or "hellfire-and-damnation" interpretation of the Bible.
Amos Flood became attracted to a 16-year-old girl named Emily who started attending his parish. He married her two weeks after she turned 17. Years later, Emily's grandfather made a deathbed confession that he (the grandfather) had fathered Emily's son, Joel. Emily's grandmother then told the entire parish about this fact, that Joel was the product of her husband's incestuous relationship with their granddaughter. Up until that time, Amos Flood had always assumed that Joel was his biological son. The shock of hearing the truth triggered a massive stroke. Amos Flood was therafter left paralized and incapable of speech.
Emily Flood continued to care for her paralilzed husband. Years later, when he was given a speech synthesis device, Amos used it to quote scriptures from the Bible which discussed the condemnation of sinners. Amos clearly still felt angry about what he considered to be betrayal by his wife.
In all all accounts of his past and present, it seems that Amos Flood was sincerely devoted to Christianity as he understood it. One example of his devotion was the "prayer room" he had in his home. In it, each member of his family could hammer six-inch iron nails into the wall, one nail for each sin they committed each day. The nails were hammered around a large crucifix, representing the crucifixion and atonenment of Jesus Christ. Amos Flood and his wife Emily spent hours every day in the prayer room. Their son Joel, however, came to hate this particularly intense expression of religious devotion.
