Grimes was one of four men hired by unscrupulous circus owners Hackett and Snead to kill Professor Drake and abscond with the professor's discovery: a 15-foot tall preshistoric man known as the "Missing Link" or "Goliath." Hackett and Snead wanted to put the Missing Link on display in their circus in order to make money. When Professor Drake refused to let his discovery be used that way, Hackett and Snead conspired to kill him and take the giant anyway.
Grimes was clearly the leader of the criminals-for-hire tapped by Hackett and Snead for the job. It was Grimes himself who murdered Professor Drake, shooting the sleeping man in the head. The story makes very clear the fact that Grimes and his cohorts did this job purely for the money. They appeared to have no moral qualms whatsoever.
