D. Calvert was the secretary for the Diamond Syndicate. Batman saw thugs attacking Calvert on the street. Batman rushed to put a halt to this attack, but fatal blows had already been struck. Batman chased the thugs off, but Calvert died in Batman's arms, muttering, "Diamond Syndicate . . . Coming on ship . . . warn them . . . warn them to watch out for . . ."
This was all Calvert was able to say before he died.
The next morning, Bruce Wayne read about Calvert's death in the newspaper. The headline identified the man's name for the first time. The headline read, "Mysterious Murder: D. Calvert, secretary of Diamond Syndicate, murdered, reason unknown as he was carrying no jewelry." The sub-headline read: "Ship docks with fortune in gems to be delivered to Diamond Synd. for showing at jewel salon."
