Precisely what religion "The Master of the Outer Darkness" should be associated with is not entirely clear. This is often the case with religion in Japan. The villain Kung referred to "The Master of the Outer Darkness" as the master of his after-death realm. Kung wore a "Tao" symble on his chest but he was a Japanese native during World War II, when most Japanese were associated with Shinto and Buddhism. Kung took the form of a dragon god associated with Japanese mythology generally and sometimes Shinto specifically. The Spectre himself spoke of returning to Kung to realm and authority of this "Master." It may be anyone's guess if "The Master of the Outer Darkness" should be associated with Shinto, Buddhism, Taoism or the Judeo-Christian religion often associated (sometimes vaguely, sometimes explicitly) with the Spectre.
