Modred sacrificed his own spirit to save his beloved fiance Janice from Chthon. Later (in modern times) Modred regained his soul, but Janice lost hers and became a servant of Chthon. Modred was finally able to surrender his soul again to save Janice's soul. She was thus able to die in peace.
