Batman saved druggies John Ackers from street thugs. Batman's ally Dr. Leslie Thompkins then treated Ackers. The grateful druggie tried to reform and formed a group known as the "Bat-Men." This was a group of volunteer vigilantes who wanted to help Batman with his crime-fighting work.
