Dr. Myron MacLain is the inventor of Adamantium. He, along with the famous indestructible metal he developed, first appeared in Avengers (vol. 1) #66.
Adamantium was named after "Adamantine," the legendary Olympian metal used to construct the mace that Hercules wields. Adamantium is an artificial alloy of iron. One of its most famous uses are Captain America's shield (a blend of Adamantium and Vibranium). Adamantium is also the metal that was bonded to Wolverine's bones and claws, giving him an unbreakable skeleton.
"Secondary Adamantium" first appeared in Marvel Team-Up (vol. 1) #18.
