Betty Simpson is the daughter of the U.S. Secretary of State. Interestingly enough, this story establishes that on mainstream Marvel (616) Earth at this time, there is a male U.S. Secretary of State named Simpson rather than a female Secretary of State named Hilary Clinton. This is despite the fact that the real-world U.S. President Barack Obama has been firmly established as the present U.S. President.

Secretary of State Simpson's daughter was traveling across country by car with her friend Veronica Robbins, trying to distance herself from her cheating boyfriend (Scott Goodman). The pair stopped at a diner in the tiny town of Dinosaur, Colorado. Weird events events ensued and Betty and Veronica both disappeared.

Betty Simpson's father subsequently contacted H.A.M.M.E.R. to ask for its leader Norman Osborn and his team of government-sanctioned Avengers to help find Betty.

Note that best friends Betty Simpson and Veronica Robbins (i.e., "Betty and Veronica") are named after the two lead female characters from Archie comics. Their appearance is also loosely based on these two iconic comic characters from another publisher.
