Miss Portnoy's mother was a housekeeper who accidentally observed one of her employers, Professor Hamilton, talking with Nazis. Professor Hamilton was actually Major Albrecht Kerfoot, a Nazi spy. Kerfoot killed the housekeeper when he realized she had observed him and thus knew the truth about him.
The housekeeper's daughter, Miss Portnoy, hired private investigator Leslie Lenrow (a.k.a. "The Ferret") to find out what happened to her mother.
