When the mutant heoine Jean Grey went to visit her own grave (actually the grave marker of the Phoenix force who had masqueraded as her), she met an elderly woman named Mrs. Scully. The woman talked about her life and imported wisdom to Jean.
As a youth, Mrs. Scully had lived in Europe. She was a rich Jewish girl and was taken to a concentration camp by the Nazis. She was allowed to live, however, because she could each dance ballet for the camp commander.
After World War II was over, the young Jewish woman came to the United States. Here she met and married Sam, a "Gentile" (i.e., non-Jewish person). For marrying outside of the family's faith, the woman's aunt rejected her. Mrs. Scully's aunt had felt that she had rejected Judaism by marrying Sam.
Now, looking back on her life, Mrs. Scully felt she could give the seemingly confused Jean Grey some advice. Mrs. Scully was an example to Jean of living many different lives, yet remaining to true to oneself.
