The mysterious Tribunal deceived the original Defenders team in order to cause them to break up.
The Tribunal has been described alternatively as a race of extraterrestrial beings as well as an organization. It is not entirely clear whether or not they were actually cosmic-level beings. Doctor Strange once described the Defenders past encounter with the Tribunal as a "cosmic hoax," but he did not provide any more details about why he said this.
