Senator Edward Kelly's beloved wife Sharon died during a battle between Master Mold (merged with Nimrod) and the X-Men. This incident further fueled Senator Kelly's hatred of mutants. Senator Kelly became even more antagonistic toward mutants and actively sought to pass laws restricting mutant activity.
Sharon Kelly was previously a waitress who worked at the New York City branch of the Hellfire Club. Sebastian Shaw, the Black King who led the Hellfire Club, chose Sharon to seduce Senator Kelly. She did so, and the Senator married her soon thereafter.
