Officer Barney and his partner, Miller, were humorously named after the small town TV police captain Barney Miller.
When Maggott, a new member of the mutant super-hero team known as the X-Men, thought that his slugs had killed people in Salem Center, he turned himself into the local police. The police he turned himself into were officers Barney and Miller.
Later the officers saw other strange things in Salem Center, including a Mongrel demon.
