Brendan Doyle was the third villain to wear the "Mauler" armor. The first was the designer of the armor, Aaron Soames. The second wa small-time thug Turk Barrett. Brendan Doyle then stole the armor on behalf of a CEO for Cordco, the company that had created the armor but then lost Defense Department funding because of past security breaches.
Brendan Doyle's was stopped from finishing his assignment for the imprisoned Cordco CEO by the super-hero Iron Man. At that time, Iron Man was Jim Rhodes, filling in for Tony Stark. Rhodes was actually a former friend of Doyle's. They had fought alongside each other as soldiers. Although Rhodes stopped Doyle from completing his mercenary assignment, Doyle managed to retain the Mauler armor.
Later during the "Armor Wars," Tony Stark (as Iron Man) confronted Doyle and demanded he return the armor, which utilized technology stolen from Stark's designs. Boyle gave the armor up without a fight, wisely assuming that he could not win in a battle against Iron Man.
Doyle was active in further criminal mercenary activity wearing "Mauler" armor, or a close approximation thereof, which he obtained somehow.
