The Film Freak attacked Arlene Owens by smashing her face with a grapefruit soaked in acid. In doing this, he was paying homage to a famous scene in which James Cagney did this (without the acid) to Mae Clarke in the 1933 film The Public Enemy.

Arlene Owens had to be taken to the hospital becaues of the serious injuries to her face.

Furthermore, Film Freak stole her security badge so that he could sneak into her place of work: S.T.A.R. Labs. Film Freak went there in order to release a giant gorilla that Owens was studying.
