Agent M was a SHIELD agent who apparently had some expertise about the Microverse. When an Acroyear was found on Earth within wreckage from a Microverse craft, Nick Fury and Dum Dum Dugan summoned Agent M to take the peculiar specimen to someone in New York - a civilian who could better investigate. The civilian turned out to be Reed Richards of the Fantastic Four.

The degree of Agent M's own expertise in the field of Microverse studies is not entirely clear. He seemed to have some knowledge about the artifacts he was entrusted with. But his primary function in the story was to transport the Microverse material in S.H.I.E.L.D. custody to somebody else (Reed Richards) for thorough investigation.
