Matt was a construction worker who worked on the same high rise building construction site where Ben Grimm (the Thing) temporarily found a job when the Fantastic Four had severe financial difficulties.

With Ben Grimm's super strength, he easily performed heavy-duty construction work far faster than regular non-powered workers. Matt politely asked Ben Grimm to slow down some. Matt pointed out that because Ben Grimm worked so fast, he was making causing there to be less work and fewer work hours for the other construction workers. He wasn't trying to make things difficult for Ben, who was just trying to help care for his "family" (the Fantastic Four). But, Matt pointed out, all the men on the crew families, and Ben's extraordinary work was making it harder for them to make the regular wages they relied on.
