Marcus Garrett was a close friend of young Franklin Richards. (It is quite likely they knew each other from school.)
Marcus and four other friends went camping in New Jersey (in the Pine Barrens) along with Reed Richards (Mister Fantastic), Susan Storm Richards (Invisible Woman) and Ben Grimm (the Thing). While there, the boys encountered dangerous aliens known as "the Visitors."
Marcus Garrett apparently was routinely called "Mark." When Susan Storm Richards (the mother of his friend Franklin) spoke to Marcus, she called him "Mark."
Mark Garrett wore glasses and looked somewhat geeky. In a group of five school-age friends (perhaps 12 years old), Mark was clearly the most timid.
