Eighteen members of Trinity Church in New York City were held hostage by Green Goblin (Norman Osborn). They were all rescued by Spider-Man.
On page 6, panel 1, in Marvel Knights Spider-Man #1, Spider-Man is narrating a scene in which he is in the middle of a savage battle with the Green Goblin. He says: "Four hours ago, this lunatic... was holding eighteen people hostage in a church and promising to gas them unless his demands were met. But he didn't want money. Cash would be too obvious for a crowd-pleaser like the Green Goblin!"
Spider-Man's narration explaining what brought him to his current fight continues throughout the rest of this page: "Likewise, drugs, helicopters and South American passports... What he wanted was me on live television, sticking a steak-knife in my stomach and forfeiting my guts for the benefit of the great American public. Naturally, I didn't comply and, well... We've been breaking each other's bones ever since."
In panel 5 on page 11, Mary Jane and Peter Parker discuss the incident at Aunt May's home.
Mary Jane Watson: "It said on the news that psychopath had eighteen hostages tied up in Trinity Church. You manage to save them all?"
Peter Parker: "Yep."
Mary Jane: "Even the little girl he had hanging off that big church bell?"
Peter Parker: "Yeah, but I think I might've dislocated my shoulder when I swung down to catch her. It really hurts when I try to make a fist."
The Trinity Church congregants discussed in this issue were never actually depicted "on-panel."
