"Butler" was a sophisticated robot that pioneering roboticist Gabriel MacGregor created and utilized as a household servant. The robot told visitor Tony Stark: "Staff consists of six dedicated automated units taks specific designation. This unit designated household butler. Programmed tasks include one: routine household maintenance; two: advanced interactivity routines; three: insulation of primary resident."

Stark asked Butler what was meant by "interactivity." The robot answered: "Facilitate household interaction with individuals; examples: answering telephone receiving mail receiving visitors receiving deliveries--"

Stark asked Butler to define "insulation," but the robot was unable to answer this question.

Tony Stark saw for himself what was meant by "insulation." Butler and the other household robots were used by MacGregor to keep him insulated from human interaction. MacGregor was so cut off from interacting with people that he became delusional and ultimately committed suicide.
