An unnamed criminal is the main character and narrator of the story "I Am the Prisoner of the Voodoo King!" The story is told in the first person.
While being escorted to prison by a police officer, the unnamed criminal sees a chance to escape. He successfully escapes into the jungles of Africa.
While fleeing, the criminal comes across a "voodoo tribe" that worships a large idol made of solid gold. The tribesmen refer to the idol as "The Voodoo King." The criminal believes the idol must be worth a fortune, and he steals it.
The criminal then goes to a different village, a village that seems quite peaceful. While there, he is told that the gold statue is cursed. He tries to put the statue down in order to fight the man who told him this, but he can't! The idol is really curseed, and he can not let go of it! He can't sell the statue with this curse in place. He thinks to himself that if he goes back to the village he got the statue from, in order to seek a solution there, the people will kill him for stealing the idol they worship.
The story ends with the cursed criminal not knowing what to do or what will happen to him.
