Ed Gross was a relatively wealthy man who lived in a nice suburb on Long Island. His actual profession was never revealed, but it is known he had enough money to become a devoted collector of super-villain paraphernalia. He bought many actual devices (including weapons) used by super-villains, as well as costumes they had worn.
Secretly, Ed Gross liked to dress up as super-villains using pieces of his collection. He then acted out "events." He didn't know that his daughter knew he did this, but she did.
In New Avengers (vol. 1) #7, recently escaped convicted super-villain Dirk Garthwaite (a.k.a. "The Wrecker") showed up at Ed Gross's suburban home. Mr. Gross was not there, but his teenage daughter was home, sunbathing. The Wrecker explained that after he was incarcerated his brother was supposed to take care of his stuff, but instead he sold his crowbar to Ed Gross.
The Wrecker forced Ed Gross's daughter to show him where it was. She took him into Ed Gross's collection room (she knew the combination on the high-security lock), where the Wrecker found his costume and enchanted crowbar.
While trying to get Ed Gross's daughter to drive him away from the Gross home, the Wrecker ran into the New Avengers. After a fierce battle, he was captured by them.
Luke Cage (one of the New Avengers) kept the crowbar.
Although Ed Gross's home and impressive super-villain paraphernalia collection was seen, the man himself was never seen on-panel.
