Big Joe was a gangster who worked for the criminal mastermind known as the Masked Marauder.
The newspapers published a story "revealing" that the masked vigilante Daredevil was really attorney Foggy Nelson. This wasn't really true, but was the result of Foggy's own plans to pose as Daredevil (in order to impress secretary Karen Page). But the Masked Marauder believed that his enemy's identity had been revealed, so he sent Big Joe and other underlings to kill Foggy.
The real Daredevil intervened and prevented Big Joe and the other thugs from harming Foggy.
