Maelen is a very minor character in the context of the Uncanny X-Men comics in which she appeared, but she was a very significant person in the personal life of Lilandra, the ruler of the galactic Shi'ar Empire.
Little information exists about Maelen, but from what little is available, it can be said that Maelen worked in the Imperial palace of Lilandra. Disparate sources state that she was Lilandra's handmaiden and that she later succeeded the venerable Araki as Lilandra's chamberlain. Reports that Maelen became Lilandra's chamberlain may not be accurate.
Maelen's most prominent appearance was also her first appearance: in Uncanny X-Men #122 (June 1979). Maelen accompanied Lilandra (the Shi'ar princess she served to the coronation ceremony where Lilandra was installed as the Majestrix - ruler over the entire Shi'ar Empire, following the death of her insane brother D'Ken. Maelen vocally expressed amazement at the scene, pointing out that in the over 200 years she had served the trone in the Shi'ar capitol, she had never before seen crowds of such size.
Along with Maelen, Lilandra was also accompanied by a female Chancellor, as well as by Professor Charles Xavier, the love of her life with whom she had recently been living with on Earth.
Some sources identify Maelen as a character who appears in Uncanny X-Men #135. The name "Maelen" is NOT used in Uncanny X-Men #135. It appears that the indexer(s) who noted her appearance in #135 mistook Maelen for Araki in a scene in which Lilandra speaks to her her chamberlain. In silhouette, they may look similar, and most appearances of Araki in #135 show only his silhouette.
Having carefully examined printed copies of Uncanny X-Men #s 122 and 135, we can state conclusively that Maelen does not appear in #135.
