A Chitauri spy transformed himself into the form of a Newfoundland dog in order to infiltrate human society. Specifically, this Chitauri spy posed as "Hobbes," a dog belonging to Bucky's nephew Grant.
When Captain America visited Bucky's home for dinner, he found that Bucky's nephew Grant, Grant's wife Sharon, and their dog were there as well. Hobbes seemed very friendly, but was ultimately exposed as a Chitauri and then battled Captain America, who killed it.
Hobbes was exposed as a Chitauri spy when Captain America saw a stream of ants heading toward him, ants driven to attack Chitauri by a widely-dispersed signal instigated by new technology developed by Hank Pym.
