Daredevil (vol. 1) #190 features a Prologue in which Elektra is attempting to climb a huge icy mountain. She fails to do so. Stick, the leader of the ninja sect known as the Chaste, ejects Elektra from the order because her heart is full of pain and hatred.
Elektra then returns to her old martial arts school in Japan. Her trainer, a man identified only by the title "Sensei" explains to Elektra that she failed Stick's test because of the murder of her father, an event which has caused great hatred and pain to fester in her heart.
Elektra leaves her Japanese sensei, determined to prove her worth to him and to Stick, by infiltrating the Hand. She allowed herself to be captured by the Hand, who require that she pass a test. The test she must pass is to kill an enemy they direct her to. Elektra kills him and passes the "test," only to discover that the "enemy" was her Japanese master, the one she called "Sensei." She has now become part of The Hand, but her sensei is dead.
