Dr. Edward Lansing was fired from his full professorship position at a prestigious teaching hospital due to his unethical experiments.
Lansing moved to San Marino, California, where he found a steady supply of outcasts he could experiment on. In trying to recreate the Super-Soldier formula that created Captain America, Lansing was able to imbue people with great strength, but it degraded their mental faculties considerably.
Edward Lansing died in issue he first appeared in.
