Max (or "Max the Axe" as he was known professionally) was a New York City-based criminal known for torturing his victims with an axe.

Max the Axe was hired by the crimeboss known as "the Rose" (secretly Richard Fisk) to kill a new "hero" who had arrived on the scene: Madcap.

Max the Axe was indeed able to capture Madcap and torture him with an axe, but Madcap's amazing healing abilities and inability to feel pain meant that Max the Axe wasn't really able to harm him.

A situation arose in which Max the Axe was trapped in a burding building. Daredevil then saved the life of Max the Axe.
