Mandy O'Hare was a freelance copywriter who lived and worked in New York City. She met Ben Grimm (a.k.a. the Thing of the famed Fantastic Four) at one of his favorite pubs and the two of them began an unusual friendship which became the central subplot of Peter David's novel Fantastic Four: What Lies Between.
Aside from the members of the Fantastic Four themselves and the novel's two principal villain (Dormammu and Psycho-Man), Mandy O'Hare is the novel's most impotant character. She is remarkably well conceived and fleshed out, with her most notable characteristic being the fact that she is physically quite unattractive. To be completely accurate, she is ugly, yet she has a good sense of humor about herself. After Ben Grimm meets her and has a wonderful time talking about baseball and other topics with her, he finds her personality very attractive. But what Ben Grimm (and, by extension, the reader) must grapple with his own insecurities about how the general public would react to being seen dating such an unattractive woman. This is particularly ironic in Ben Grimm's case, because he himself lives every day as a "monster" due to his exposure to cosmic rays.
