Steve Petty, a high school student at Midtown High, was the son of the inventor who created the sophisticated computer/robot known as the "Living Brain."
Petty reactivated the Living Brain so he could use the machine against his enemies. This led to an electrical accident which mutated Petty into the villain known as "Phreak."
Spider-Man encountered Steve Petty (and then Phreak) when he returned to Midtown High School in his civilian identity as Peter Parker to work as a substitute teacher.
Petty was a very smart science student, but also rather obsessed.
