Dr. Claudia DuBois was a black French woman who encountered the New York-based Daredevil when he was on a secret SHIELD mission in France.
Daredevil was undercover as "Laurent Levasseur," helping SHIELD to thwart a plot by the NYC-based crimelord known as the Kingpin (Wilson Fisk). Fisk planned to sell a top-secret list of undercover SHIELD agents to a dangerous cabal of European crimelords.
During Daredevil's mission in France (posing as Laurent Levasseur), he was injured. Dr. Claudia DuBois helped with his mission considerably, treating his injuries.
During the course of these events, Dr. DuBois was kidnapped by the Kinpin. The Kingpin planned to kill her. It was actually Daredevil's old enemy Stilt-Man (Wilbur Day) who tried to chase Daredevil ("Levasseur") down and tell him about the danger Dr. DuBois was in. Although Stilt-Man was a criminal who was working as one of the Kingpin's agents in France, Stilt-Man apparently panicked when he realized that the Kingpin planned to kill Dr. DuBois, who was an innocent hostage.
