Leslie Evans was a rather meek and mild scientist. His overbearing wife (Alice Evans) looked own on him, openly regarding him as "unmanly." But one day Leslie proved his worth. The alien Groot landed, apparently intending to invade Earth. Groot was a tree-like being, and Leslie Evans was able to destroy him - using termites.
(Groot later returned, quite alive, not actually destroyed by Leslie Evans, and became a stalwart member of the heroic Guardians of the Galaxy. But this was long after Leslie Evans had been heralded as a hero.)
