Curtis tests Hardware against the Crimson S.Y.S.T.E.M. Curtis then gets introduced to Preston Dawes, his new technical assistant. Curtis confronts Alva about Preston. The discussion leads to tenuous continuation of their truce.

Hardware faces off against the Crimson S.Y.S.T.E.M. which is run by Milton St. Cloud. Curtis finds out more about the Synrep Technology from Preston Dawes. Curtis thinks Alva is double-crossing him and confronts him again. They are interrupted by a Crimson Systematic attack.

We see Alva and Curtis run from a new Crimson Systematic. Alva eventually defeats the Systematic only to find Preston Dawes at the controls. Preston Dawes is being manipulated by Milton St. Cloud. Preston loses his legs during the confrontation. Alva helps Preston's recovery and gets revenge on the people that used Preston's research against him.
